The "Kolgans" was purchased by Loutjie van Aswegen in 1988 in Knysna on the Cape south coast. It was used on the lagoon as a ferry showing visitors to Knysna the different sites and was called the "Spirit of Knysna". It took three days to transport the vessel by road to Magalies Park and the only means of launching it into the Hartbeespoort Dam was by driving the truck into the dam until only the exhaust chimney on the cab stuck out of the water. The vessel weighs 4 tons and is 15 metres long and 4 metres wide. It is powered by two 90 horsepower motors and can accommodate 50 persons. |
